The Auto protect is switched off and can't be switched back on, there is an error with e-mail scanning, the full system scan can't be completed but the automatic updates seem to be working fine. Loading up the interface says that there are problem with it.

He also has Norton antivirus software so his computer should be well protected although there is a problem with this software too. I'm not entirely sure the pop up and the being unable to log on problem are connected though. I did a search on the forum and google for the popup and it is suggested that HijackThis is run and the report posted (see below). He also has an Amaeana popup every now and then. The main problem is that he can't log on to any site that requires a username and password, like on-line banking, hotmail or googlemail and MSN messenger although strangely he is able to log to his Tiscali account.
